May is skin cancer awareness month!
Skin cancer is one of the easiest cancers to detect in its earliest stages, as the signs are present on the surface of the skin. Did you know that as little as 2 minutes of sun exposure is enough to begin the production of UV free-radical damage?
FDA and Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. SPF 30 filters 97%; SPF 50 filters 98%; and SPF 100 filters 99%, but no sunscreen can block 100% of the sun's UVB rays.
Even on a quick dog walk or a drive to the store, sunscreen is a must before you leave the house. Windows only block against UVB rays not UVA rays. See for yourself and compare the left side (driver side) with your right side - notice more freckles or sun spots on the left side of your face/body?
No matter what sunscreen you choose the rule is “read the label” and look at the active ingredients. Not all sun products are created equal. Some sunscreens are formulated with chemicals such as Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, Homosalate that get absorbed into the skin causing irritation and migrate into eyes causing more harm than good.
Be sure your sunscreen is:
- Broad spectrum
- Water resistant (80 minutes)
- Hypoallergenic
- Non-comedogenic
- Paba free
- Safe to apply to compromised skin after facials, peels, lasers, etc.
There is an array of sun protection on the market. Tinted sunscreens are a great option because they are the perfect combination of broad-spectrum sun protection, color, and moisture with all the benefits of vitamins and antioxidants to help protect and restore and cover up good almost as much as makeup does.
We take skin health seriously and so should you!
